Specialist pipe fabrication facility delivers on time, on budget – every time

Pipe Center’s specialist pipe fabrication facility at Basildon, Essex, co-ordinates and delivers outstanding prefabricated pipe solutions for buildings and industry.

As one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe, we can cater for projects of all sizes - from smaller contracts up to prefabricated solutions for major construction projects. Our handling facilities are suited to managing projects with tube sizes of 30nb to 700nb.

Recent contracts include:

  • a multi-million pound installation at Canary Wharf
  • a major new hospital in Derby
  • and a prestigious new “signature” building destined for the centre of London

Located just off the M25, we have fast-track access into the heart of the capital and rapid access via the motorway network to all parts of the country. Completed fabrications can be delivered via our internal trunker network to Pipe Center branches in any part of the UK.

Outstanding facilities and expert staff

Our large workshop is served with state-of-the-art materials handling and fabrication equipment, giving great flexibility and enabling us to handle the most complicated and demanding projects.

Our team of engineers, pipe welding and fabrication experts, are qualified and coded to the highest industry standards. The average number of years experience in the industry among our employees is 37 years.

How we work

Incoming projects are analysed by skilled engineers in the design office. Detailed general arrangement drawings and spool drawings are generated with the use of Auto-CAD, before the workflow is planned into the workshops.

We handle high volumes of prefabricated pipework in carbon steel and stainless steel. Our expertise in the use of Victaulic's is unparalleled.

Once spools are completed, all weld details are logged by our welding engineers with a percentage being selected for x-ray to ensure integrity. All major projects are subject to full weld mapping, a copy of which is provided to the client upon completion, giving total assurance of finished quality.

An important benefit of the Basildon facility is that it shares its location with Pipe Center’s major feeder and stocking centre. This means that most components needed for a project are to hand, and work can begin immediately without delays sourcing products.

Clarity on costs

Cost control is one of the key drivers behind the expansion of offsite fabrication. Reflecting this, all work carried out by us is costed according to an agreed schedule of rates, giving customers upfront clarity on project costs.

The fabrication business began at Bromley-by-Bow in 1933, and moved into expanded new premises at West Horndon in 1940.

Fabrication flourished and grew. Pipe Center acquired it in 1996, after identifying the unique qualities and benefits of in-house fabrication. Substantial investment followed.

Experts in Victaulic

We have been at the forefront of Victaulic grooving for over 25 years, and our Victaulic grooving facilities are second to none.

The Victaulic system is a cost-effective, rapid assembly jointing system for the vast majority of applications. Pipe preparation is roll grooving or cut grooved, overcoming the need for hot metal joining.

It provides full end load restraint up to the maximum recommended working pressure, frequently eliminating the need for thrust restraint. It can also provide a degree of flexibility in the pipe system where required, not provided by flanged jointing method.

We have facilities for roll grooving from 25nb to 600nb and cut grooving from 25nb to 200nb in mild steel, stainless steel and copper.

Our unique “combination approach” combines both Victaulic and conventional welded fittings in a single design, to deliver the best of both approaches.

Thin wall Tru-bore stainless steel

Pipe Center has been at the forefront of the use of thin wall stainless steel for standard welded fabrication and rolled grooved ends for many years.

The main benefits are:

  • Wall thickness significantly thinner than conventional system
  • No painting required
  • Resulting in significant weight saving - making erection onsite easier and cheaper
  • Full range of compatible fittings available
  • Jointing is by butt welding or angle collars with aluminium epoxy coated backing flanges
  • Size range 15mm to 1600 mm dia
